Nowadays, the notion of sustainable development appears more and more often in discussions with family and friends, as well as environmental aspects, reduction of waste production and rationalization of production, consumption and use of energy.
We often question our own efforts to contribute to sustainable development, a sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
It is in this spirit that the municipality of Mondorf-les-Bains joined the climate pact 1.0 on April 30, 2013.
The objective is to bring the different municipalities, politicians, citizens and businessmen to adopt a common ecological and sustainable policy, especially in the following areas
  • the fight against climate change,
  • development and land use planning,
  • municipal buildings and vehicles,
  • supply and disposal of all resources,
  • mobility,
  • internal organization or
  • communication.
A “climate team” was created, consisting of representatives of the aldermanic college and the technical department, members of the environment commission and some external experts. The goal is for these teams to work on improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in functional municipal buildings, street lighting and municipal vehicles.
With the help of the climate compact advisor provided by the state, this working group was able to plan and organize a range of activities and events at its monthly meetings from 2014 to 2021. Initiatives and avenues of thought for the local government were part of its remit, as was the discussion and evaluation of state regulations or grant texts.
The question also arises as to what place the citizen can or should occupy in this commitment? Many small and/or large measures can be established on a daily basis, from simple waste sorting and ecomobility to building a sustainable home.
