Nature Pact

The municipality of Mondorf-les-Bains certified under the Nature Pact for its policy to protect biodiversity and natural resources

Our municipality has shown great commitment in achieving a result of 43.1% of the points in the catalog of measures, which corresponds to the basic certification in the Pacte Nature program. We are very proud to have achieved this result. Our performance in the area of “communication and cooperation”, for which we obtained 69.5% of the points in the catalog of measures, is very positive. This shows that our commitment to the Nature Pact is bearing fruit.

Communicating our nature policy with our citizens

Our commune is adopting a very proactive communication strategy to keep our citizens informed about projects via Facebook, the communal bulletin and other channels. One of the novelties in 2024 was the certification of our “Action Grand Nettoyage” event as a GreenEvent. In addition, in 2024, horses were used for the first time to mow part of the farm tracks. A video of this initiative was also produced and posted on Facebook. In addition, a large quantity of communal wood was used to build birdhouses and insect shelters, among other things. An important project under our commune’s Nature Pact is the identification of biotope trees in the communal forests by the foresters responsible, in collaboration with the Administration de la Nature et des Forêts (ANF). It is important to stress that not all trees can be classified as biotope trees: certain criteria must be met, such as the presence of woodpecker cavities, large dead branches, a minimum trunk diameter or a minimum distance of 30 metres from the nearest hiking trail. These living trees are excluded from any exploitation and left to their natural decomposition process. In addition, the commune continues to make every effort to acquire new forests and manage them sustainably in accordance with PEFC label criteria. Thanks to the catalog of 77 Nature Pact measures, we have been able to move effectively towards a sustainable policy in the fields of natural resource conservation and biodiversity preservation. By committing ourselves to implementing the measures proposed in the catalog, our municipality is contributing not only to the quantified objectives of the National Nature Conservation Plan (PNPN), but also to the implementation of the ecological aspects of the river basin management plan and the strategy for adapting to the effects of climate change. In return, the State grants us financial aid, which varies according to the level and year of our certification, as well as the surface area of the commune, and covers the costs of our Pacte Nature consultant. Klima-Agence’s mission is to manage the Pacte Nature program on behalf of the French Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity. Klima-Agence manages the program on the one hand, and provides us with technical and operational support on the other. Finally, Klima-Agence is responsible for the ongoing development of tools and communication activities for the Nature Pact.

Our future projects: greening our urban environments

In future, we will be concentrating on drawing up a management and development plan, developed in collaboration with the SIAS biological station and the local gardening department. This plan will follow on from the inventory of public green spaces, trees, hedges and shrubs, scheduled for completion this year. In addition, a checklist for PAPs (plans d’aménagement particulier) and one for the construction or renovation of communal buildings are currently being prepared. These documents will incorporate criteria from both the Nature Pact and the Climate Pact. Protecting nature is everyone’s business. If you too would like to make a commitment to protecting nature, we invite you to find out more about the Nature Pact.
